FLAGCFLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF GENETIC COUNSELORS |
Thank you so much for considering a gift to FLAGC.
Let us tell you a little about the projects that we would like to fund and the impact that you can have on our State. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.
DIVERSITY EFFORTS – The inclusion of genetic counselors from minority and underprivileged backgrounds is a priority for the wellbeing of our profession. There are many obstacles that prevent students from many different backgrounds to enter this profession, and it is our mission to help diminish these obstacles. The inclusion of voices of all different groups will inevitably benefit the patients receiving care, as not all patient needs are the same, and representation matters. The funds raised via this modality will be allocated towards a scholarship to cover the many fees required to apply to genetic counseling school in Florida, including the matching fee, and the two application fees for the USF program. We would love to help subsidize other costs associated with genetic counseling school that are simply unreachable by many, and immediately prevent amazing talented students from pursuing this profession. As our fund grows, so will the areas in which we can support students of great need fulfill their dreams of becoming genetic counselors.
RESEARCH GRANTS - Genetic research and genetic counseling research is very important, but rarely free. Genetics is an ever-evolving field as we discover genes associated with disease and improve the ways in which we care for patients with hereditary disorders. We would like to be able to offer research grants for genetic counseling students in the state of Florida performing research for their thesis project. We would also like to offer research grants for genetic counselors who propose studies which further the mission of FLAGC, including exploring alternative service delivery models to reach more patients, improving diversity in our field, and research into genetic syndromes affecting our patients.
EDUCATION - FLAGC is very proud to offer an annual educational conference to keep its members up to date on the latest advances in genetics. The annual conference also allows for networking among the state and provides continuing education credits needed to maintain genetic counselor certification. We would like to have the ability to bring national and international experts to Florida to educate our members. Funds would be used to cover travel expenses including flights, hotel, and speaker stipends. We would also like funding for educational events for individuals wanting to learn more about choosing genetic counseling as their career field.
GENERAL FUNDS - There are many expenses that go into the day-to-day budget of FLAGC. We pay fees for the website domain and website maintenance. If we have a virtual event, there are fees for the virtual platform. We have fees to NSGC (the national organization) for the approval of continuing education credits and to the Florida Department of State. Our profits for the organization are typically funded by companies who sponsor our annual educational conference. However, our sponsorships dwindled last year due to the virtual format of the conference caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and we have been operating at a deficit for two of the past three years.
